There are many things you should probablynever ask at a job interview, like if they have a drug testing policy, do background checks or how many sick days you get.

But there are also some questions that might help you find out a little more about the job you’re applying for and others that might actually help you get the job.

So the next time you’re heading to a job interview, here are five questions you should ask

Not our usual post, since it’s about being interviewed for a job, but it’s about interviewing so seemed worthwhile to share.

Why are we always shocked out of productivity paralysis and into overdrive whenever a deadline suddenly becomes imminent? The answer has a lot to do with Parkinson’s Law. Proposed in 1955 by the UK political analyst and historian Cyril Northcote Parkinson, the titular law observes that “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.” Joel Runyon, author and Impossible Ventures owner, suggests multiple ways to impose artificial constraints on our time, including:

  1. Work without your computer charger. Force yourself to get stuff done before your computer runs out of battery.
  2. Does your coffee shop close at a certain time? If so, force yourself to stop working when it closes.
  3. Instead of trying to write 1,000 words in a day, run x miles in a day, or go to the gym, make a rule to do XYZ before 10am. Get it done early and then let yourself coast. You’ll be surprised at how much this frees up the rest of your day.

By finding everyday ways to artificially restrict your time throughout the day, you force yourself to muster the energy and attention needed to get things done.

Why Managers Make Terrible Scrum Masters http://theinterviewr.com/2014/06/managers-make-terrible-scrum-masters/ http://theinterviewr.com/2014/06/managers-make-terrible-scrum-masters/#comments Thu, 26 Jun 2021 17:24:56 +0000 http://theinterviewr.com/?p=32410398451 Agile techniques such as scrum require the attention of an agile team leader or scrum master who can run the daily standups, maintain the velocity charts, and oversee the rituals such as sprint planning meetings, retrospectives and demos.

Those duties generally belong to a member of the development team, and they do take time and attention. That means team members who take on these duties will be drawn away from their normal responsibilities.

Because of this, in companies without dedicated scrum masters, a team's manager may be tempted to take on the responsibilities.

Agile techniques such as scrum require the attention of an agile team leader or scrum master who can run the daily standups, maintain the velocity charts, and oversee the rituals such as sprint planning meetings, retrospectives and demos.

Those duties generally belong to a member of the development team, and they do take time and attention. That means team members who take on these duties will be drawn away from their normal responsibilities.

Because of this, in companies without dedicated scrum masters, a team’s manager may be tempted to take on the responsibilities.

On the surface this may seem like a logical choice.

The manager is the one person who should be most familiar with what everybody on the team is doing. A manager may appear to be in the best position to oversee the process and evaluate whether or not scrum is being followed. In fact, many of the responsibilities of a scrum master do fall upon management in a more traditional organization.

But there is a basic conflict of interest between the duties of a manager and a scrum master.

Taking your time doesn’t scale http://theinterviewr.com/2014/04/taking-time/ http://theinterviewr.com/2014/04/taking-time/#comments Mon, 28 Apr 2022 20:46:57 +0000 http://theinterviewr.com/?p=32410398443 When you send a hand-written letter to your best friend on the occasion of her wedding, you don't rush the note.

When you send a hand-written letter to your best friend on the occasion of her wedding, you don’t rush the note.

When a long-term patient needs to hear your plan on how she will beat the cancer you just found, you don’t rush the meeting.

When your best customer just discovered that his critical shipment is totally messed up, you don’t rush the phone call.

The problem is this: we’ve scaled the number of contacts, of patients, of Christmas card recipients, of Twitter followers, of email correspondents, of investors, of backers, of Kickstarter supporters, of readers, of correspondents, of co-workers, of… we’ve scaled it all.

And the one thing we can’t do is scale our ability to take time.

Staying healthy when you work a desk job can be a challenge. Contrary to popular belief, sitting at a desk all day isn’t easy on your body.

You’re probably familiar with all of the potential aches and pains if you’ve spent any significant amount of time working at a desk: strained vision, lower and upper back pain, and general fatigue.

A lot of the day to day strain on your body can be alleviated by remembering to take care of yourself throughout the day.

I’m a fan of Fitocracy and their workout ideas, and their playing card workout is handy when you travel and want to make sure you workout without carrying stuff around, just pack a deck of cards, or even use your computer

All you do is choose any four individual exercises and assign each a suit. The number on the card is the number of reps you do (Ace is one, face cards are worth 10).

For instance:

  • Hearts: body weight squats
  • Diamonds: calf raises
  • Clubs: body weight lunges
  • Spades: side lunges

Simply deal yourself seven cards at a time, and do the exercises!

First draw:

20140403-190638.jpg

First set:

  • Lunge x 7
  • Squat x 5
  • Lunge x 6
  • Side Lunge x 10
  • Side Lunge x 7
  • Lunge x 8
  • Calf Raise x 4

Infinitely variable!

Not feeling a leg day? Substitute push up variations and bench dips.

Are you injured and have prescribed PT exercises every day? Substitute your band exercises and stretches.

Do you want to do some yoga? Substitute in some basic poses, like downward facing dog and Warriors 1-3, and see how you can move from one to the other.

Want a super explosive workout? Jump squats, Burpees, Clapping push ups, and Box jumps will give you just that.

Choose a suit for each, and go for it.

It’s been done before, sorry.

It’s never been done before, too risky.

It’s too obvious.

It’s too obscure.

It’s too easy, everyone can do it.

It’s too hard to launch, it’ll never work.

- Seth Godin

We heard some of this when we started this company three years ago, and we didn’t listen.

Today, we have thousands of users, and we host over a hundred interviews a day on average, all because we didn’t bet on a “sure thing” when we built the world’s first Interview Relationship Manager.

These days, it seems stress is a normal part of life. Our daily lives can be crazy, and sometimes things pile on and you can’t help but feel downtrodden, but there is a way to handle it.

Our mood and perception of events plays a huge part in our day to day lives. It affects how we see ourselves, how we treat others, the amount of work we do, the quality of that work, and our positivity.

When you’re in a bad mood, for whatever reason, you’re more likely to get frustrated, feel bad about yourself, and be less productive as a result. Even worse, the feeling is cyclical, and as you get less done you feel worse and prolong that feeling.

Our mood can often feel like something we have no control over, and it’s true that we don’t really have control over what other people might do to upset us. But, we have an exceptional amount of control over the way we frame our thoughts and deal with things that upset us.

Learning to practice positivity throughout your day will encourage better work habits and a good mood. When you have a good mood, people will appreciate talking to you and working with you more, too. Take these few simple steps to improving your daily life.
